What Is an Affogato. Just as the word “affogato” literally means “drowned” in Italian, an affogato is gelato drowned in espresso. While its exact origins are up for debate, it is an Italian dessert that is believed to have gained popularity in the 1950s when the ice cream industry modernized. While bitter, hot coffee and sweet, frozen gelato might seem like polar opposites, that's exactly what makes this dessert so good. The hot espresso warms some of the ice cream to make a sweet coffee froth, and the ice cream melts slowly enough that you still can spoon your cold dessert in between sips. Although affogatos are commonly enjoyed after dinner, they're also a delicious treat for when you need a little caffeine boost. In fact, two Ben and Jerry’s Flavor Gurus have even told me they use pints of vanilla ice cream to make affogatos for their morning coffee almost every day at work. As people who spend their entire day experimenting with ice cream, I’d consider them the experts. So, if they say adding espresso turns ice cream into breakfast, I think I have to believe them. All you really need is any ice cream you can find and a shot or two of espresso.

An Affogato is both a dessert and an espresso… together at last. It’s prepared by pouring a shot of espresso directly over top of a scoop ice cream or gelato, and served in a small cup or glass along with a spoon. The name comes from the Italian for “drowned”, which your ice cream literally is once delicious espresso is poured over top of it. Only you can rescue it! You may eat your affogato with the spoon, or stir it together and wait long enough for the ice cream to melt, and drink the whole shebang. It never hurts to ask. Typically an adjustment to the shot is not required to prepare an Affogato, though your barista may elect to pull an espresso particularly well-suited to enjoyment with ice cream. A Decaffogato is prepared just like a traditional Affogato, only with a shot of decaffeinated espresso.

What is matcha? Matcha is a form of green tea powder made from finely ground green tea leaves. It’s earthy and bitter, but overall smooth and pleasant to drink. Does matcha have caffeine? Yes, it has about 30 - 60 mg of caffeine per serving, which is less than coffee but more than plain green tea. Is matcha vegan? Yes, matcha is naturally vegan. So if you are vegan or vegetarian, as long as you choose a suitable gelato / ice cream, this dessert is fair game! Matcha can be found in some specialty grocery stores or home stores, but you’ll find the widest range ordering online. Some of my favorite brands include: Tenzo, Rocky’s Matcha, Jade Leaf, and while I haven’t tried it, I’ve heard Ippodo is great. A high-quality ceremonial grade matcha powder is my preference – the more vibrant the green, the better the matcha. If the green looks kind of muddy or murky or a little brownish, it’s likely not a high quality matcha.

Affogato is traditionally a vanilla ice cream drowned in coffee – and it’s the perfect mix between a post-dinner coffee and dessert. We’ve used frozen yoghurt to lower the fat and sugar in our version. Use decaf coffee if you’re enjoying this dessert in the evening and find it difficult to sleep after caffeine. Cut the cherries into quarters and add to a small bowl. Scoop a ball of frozen yoghurt onto the cherries and pour over the espresso. Eat immediately! Chill or freeze the bowl before serving to keep the yoghurt frozen for longer. Our affogato recipe is dessert and coffee rolled into one.

An Affogato is a delightful Italian dessert combining two simple yet indulgent components: ice cream and hot espresso. The word "affogato" in Italian translates to "drowned," which perfectly describes the preparation process of this dessert. The Affogato first appeared in Italy, with no one place or person claiming to be the originator. The secret to the success of the Affogato is its simplicity. It is a hard thing to get wrong. You might find 1:1 is more to your taste. Vanilla and espresso is a classic for a reason. But there is no end to the ways you can play with flavours. The beauty of Affogato is its versatility, so don't hesitate to construct your signature combination! Is Affogato a Coffee or Dessert? Yes.
