Affogato means “drowned” in Italian, which is the perfect name for this Italian dessert, as it’s ice cream drowned in espresso. Affogato also makes an impressive, but easy, dinner party dessert if your guests enjoy an after dinner espresso. This is one of these dessert recipes you really don’t need measurements or instructions for once you’ve had one—it’s truly that simple. To me this is a good ratio for one shot of espresso. I like to freeze ice cream in these small milk glasses I thrifted. You could also make these cups ahead for a dinner party and then all you need to do is add the espresso shots, and I make them to serve. Instead of ice cream you could use gelato, sorbet, or frozen custard. Add toppings like you could a sundae for a nontraditional twist: sprinkles, caramel syrup, sea salt, crushed Oreo cookies, etc. Add a shot of liquor, like amaretto, to this dessert to make it ‘naughty.’ Where relevant, we recommend using your own nutrition calculations.

Affogato, meaning "drowned" in Italian, is a simple yet indulgent dessert of hot espresso (and a splash of liqueur if you’re looking for an adult version) poured over ice cream. The real delight of an affogato lies in the contrast of temperatures—the hot, intense espresso melts the cold ice cream to create something truly delicious. This dessert is as easy as it gets – only two ingredients and it takes no more than 5 minutes to prepare. Ingredients: 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream (or try using pistachio ice cream for added indulgence) 1 shot of espresso (we recommend Fullsteam Espresso) A splash of Amaretto (optional) Method: Brew a fresh shot of espresso using your espresso machine or moka pot. Place 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream into a serving glass. Just before serving pour the hot espresso shot (and the amaretto) directly over the ice cream. Serve the affogato immediately so the espresso is still hot and the ice cream is not yet melted. Enjoy!

It’s the easiest way to turn coffee into a dessert. That’s why affogato felt like a revelation. But in Italy, it’s treated with the same reverence as the coffee itself. I’ll be honest: classic Italian desserts don’t always do it for me. But affogato? It’s the rare sweet that hits every note—creamy, bitter, cold, and hot. And with just two ingredients, it’s about as low-effort and high-reward as desserts get. No espresso maker? No problem.
