The affogato dessert has its roots firmly planted in Italy’s rich culinary history. The name “affogato” means “drowned” in Italian, perfectly capturing the essence of this treat: hot espresso poured over a scoop of ice cream or gelato. An affogato is the delightful fusion of two iconic Italian flavors: coffee and gelato. Traditionally, it features a scoop of vanilla gelato “drowned” in a shot of hot espresso, creating a rich blend where the cold, sweet gelato meets the hot, bitter coffee. This classic combination is beloved for its contrasting temperatures and flavors. While the traditional affogato remains popular, many variations exist. Some add a splash of liqueur, like amaretto or Frangelico, for an adult twist, while others experiment with flavored gelato, such as chocolate or hazelnut, to add complexity. The combination of freshly brewed espresso and creamy gelato provides a sensory experience that is both refreshing and invigorating. Its rich flavors and contrasting textures make it a must-try for dessert lovers. Whether you’re a resident or a curious traveler, affogato offers a delicious gateway into the heart of Italian culinary tradition.

Starbucks is once again reinventing the coffee experience. The coffee chain is testing affogato, an Italian-style dessert in which a scoop of ice cream is "drowned" in a shot of hot espresso, in 10 Reserve coffee bars in D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, Maryland and Boston, and 100 Starbucks stores in the Orange County, California, area. Starbucks has used its Roastery locations as test kitchens for several other drinks that were later rolled out nationwide. All ice cream will be from the Mora Iced Creamery, a creamery in Bainbridge, Washington. Here's the full list of new affogato-inspired offerings at Roasteries: Classic Affogato: Two shots of Reserve small-lot espresso poured over vanilla ice cream. House Affogato: Two shots of Reserve small-lot espresso with a touch of Demerara syrup poured over vanilla ice cream and dusted with cinnamon.

This affogato recipe proves that dessert doesn’t need to be complicated to feel special. Just espresso and vanilla gelato, and you’ve got a treat that feels sophisticated but takes zero effort. This classic Italian dessert, called caffè affogato, couldn’t be simpler. Just two ingredients come together to make something much better than the sum of their parts. Creamy vanilla gelato or ice cream topped with a hot shot of espresso—it’s the perfect after-dinner treat when you want something fancy-ish but don’t want to lift a finger. If you’re into coffee desserts, don’t miss my classic tiramisu, no-churn Vietnamese coffee ice cream, or espresso martinis. They’re all perfect when you want something that feels just a little fancy without a lot of effort—kind of like affogato. Scoop the gelato or ice cream into a small bowl or glass, then pour the hot espresso right over the top. Top with shaved chocolate, a splash of liqueur, or pair it with a biscotti on the side. Serve immediately so the textures stay distinct and the dessert doesn’t turn overly soupy.
