What Is Affogato. The name “affogato” comes from the Italian word “affogare,” which is the Italian verb for “to drown.” It’s an appropriate name, as affogato is just gelato or ice cream “drowned” in rich, warm espresso. Affogatos have been popular in Italy for many years, and are served in cafes after lunch and dinner. Using instant coffee for affogato would be considered sacrilege — only the highest-quality beans should be used for this delightful dessert. The basic ingredients, per serving: 1 shot of espresso or three tablespoons of strong coffee 2 small scoops of vanilla gelato or ice cream Shaved almonds, chocolate curls, or mint for garnish Stemmed dessert glasses for that fancy touch. If you don’t have an espresso machine at home, never fear — our Lieto Single Serve Machine makes a great espresso. Use our signature blend of Espresso Roast Coffee to yield an assertive and expressive coffee at home that is a perfect fit for your affogato.

It's perfect for those who are adverse to coffee or are just looking to try something new beyond simply drinking matcha. Matcha is a form of green tea powder made from finely ground green tea leaves. Affogato means “drowned” in Italian – so it loosely translates to ice cream being “drowned” (e.g., covered) in espresso (which is used in a traditional affogato), or this case, matcha. Does matcha have caffeine? Yes, it has about 30 - 60 mg of caffeine per serving, which is less than coffee but more than plain green tea. Is matcha vegan? Yes, matcha is naturally vegan. You should eat it with a spoon until the ice cream is all melted, at which point you should drink the remaining ice cream / matcha mixture. Matcha can be found in some specialty grocery stores or home stores, but you’ll find the widest range ordering online. Some of my favorite brands include: Tenzo, Rocky’s Matcha, Jade Leaf, and while I haven’t tried it, I’ve heard Ippodo is great.
